The feeling at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?
Was the team's progress unraveling, or was there ever any cohesion holding it together from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, before he to later acknowledge that the club had not mentioned the transfer ban they were about to receive for financial irregularities. He completed last season on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were pushing for him to extend his stay temporarily. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. Cancellieri arrived originally during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."
Finding His Best Role
Perhaps the manager was still trying to determine the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward.
