Educating a Toddler to Develop into an 'English Gentleman' – Is It Worth the Money?

Child education concept
The company responsible for the advert states that what seems like "luxury or peculiarity" is in fact "deliberate commitment in initial learning".

"Parents located in North London seeks an exceptional and experienced instructor to support their smallest child on his initial journey to becoming an British gentleman."

Upon seeing this advertisement, you might naturally overlook the term "beginning" as mere figurative language.

However, it might be the most significant aspect of this distinctive position posting, as it seeks to hire a tutor for a one-year-old.

Numerous of submissions have already been sent in since the unnamed family advertised their search for the £180,000 per year tutor, who needs to be "an exceptional individual".

During the past few weeks, the listing has attracted attention in the press, with numerous asking why?

Forward-Thinking Method

The CEO, head and founder of an education consultancy, which is assisting the family in their hunt, stated that despite initial scepticism, he considered the plan "forward-looking", and "advanced".

When he consulted the family, he mentioned they appreciated the atypical nature of their request, and how young their son is.

However, they clarified that they "preferred not to postpone any longer" to get a tutor, as they had waited until their elder sibling was five, and by that point "cultural bias had by then set in".

What exactly did the family refer to by "cultural leaning"?

It's "comprehensive", the expert replied. "The manner you eat, the manner you speak".

He stated the older sibling had adopted "extremely delicate, non-verbal cues" from the family, and had adopted their cultural norms. The family explained to the consultant they did not want this pattern to happen again with their younger child.

The plan: To hire a UK tutor, who should speak with RP, to guide the baby right from the beginning.

Tutoring discussion
The tutoring agency claim the listing has started a wider debate about how families regard learning, advantage and the function of family background in learning.

Osmotic Learning

"A great deal of the development at the beginning here is rather acquired indirectly," said Adam.

It's via this natural absorption that the family are expecting the child will pick up the UK customs they want to instil.

The consultant said the tutor must be an individual who attended "the right kinds of schools – comparable categories of schools as the family aspire to send their son to".

"The educator just has to be the appropriate candidate, they'll be performing things they aren't even aware they're doing, effortlessly," he added.

Money No Object

The family explained to Adam the successful candidate should preferably also have familiarity of or interest in horse riding, alpine skiing, the arts and musical activities so as to inspire the child in a diverse set of interests.

More than that though, he explained the family desired the tutor to register the child on a range of classes so the child would be "equestrian training and learning an musical instrument by the time they are about three years old".

In the family's perspective, helping their son grow into a "English gentleman" will lead to success and create opportunities.

"Considering the rights and wrongs of that, because it's undoubtedly a status symbol," he adds.

Yet, notwithstanding all this tutelage in "UK identity", might the child adopt what is termed cultural leaning from the globally influenced family he is raised by regardless?

"Absolutely", answered the CEO. "They know this could fail, but they've simply adopted the perspective of, 'we should try and let's go as quickly as we can', because the price of it is not relevant," he said.

Overly Optimistic

Several in the education sector who have these concerns.

An education leader, head and founder of a tutoring service, who also offer individual instructors, commented that "the journey of adopting dual cultures, or in fact, becoming oneself, is something that must be lived into, not engineered."

The expert explained that he had moved from the Far East to the United Kingdom at the time of childhood, and had been raised understanding and practicing both cultures. He went on to study at the University of Cambridge.

The educator was the first person born in mainland China to be elected to the position of Financial Officer of the Cambridge Union Society.

"The idea that one individual can serve as a living vessel of Britishness, an individual who can in some way impart the qualities of a British gentleman upon a one-year-old child, seems to me idealistic and unrealistic," he stated.

"In my experience, engaging a typically English tutor from infancy will will not instantly produce the outcome they desire.

"I did not have such a tutor, and nevertheless I have been lucky enough to experience numerous of the experiences they hope for their son."

He continued: "The reality is, cultural identity cannot be forced from the outside; it must be selected, and it must originate internally."

Acquiring Englishness

Certainly, English culture is something the expert thinks can be taught – and commercialized.

"I think the fact that the world regards us in this light is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
