The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the ability to contest certain decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review specific decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
